Utility Global and Colorado School of Mines: Advancing Hydrogen Innovation Through Strategic Partnership

May 13, 2025

Pioneering Next-Gen Clean Energy Solutions Through Research, Technology, and Collaboration

HOUSTON, TX – May 13, 2025 – In early April, Utility Global's Bryan Blackburn joined researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders at the Hydrogen Symposium hosted by the Colorado School of Mines—a flagship event exploring every phase of hydrogen innovation, from geologic hydrogen and transport to fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Representing the commercial sector on a panel of technical experts, Utility shared insights on what it will take to bring hydrogen technologies to scale—highlighting the company’s unique approach, grounded in both private funding and academic collaboration.

Turning Research into Real-World Impact

At the heart of Utility's innovation strategy is a strategic partnership with Colorado School of Mines, a leading R1 research institution known for its expertise in energy systems and materials science.

Through this partnership, Utility is working closely with Dr. Neal Sullivan and Dr. Carolina Herradon Hernandez at the Colorado Fuel Cell Center to accelerate testing, validation, and market readiness for its H2Gen® technology and eXERO™ platform. By integrating research-led insights with rapid commercial development, this partnership offers a clear competitive edge. “Mines and the Colorado Fuel Cell Center are excited to partner with the R&D team at Utility to advance Utility’s unique eXERO technology,” said Professor Sullivan. “We’re leveraging robust infrastructure and deep expertise to extend performance and broaden applications.”

This work includes modeling material behavior at the micro scale, mapping pressure and temperature effects on performance, and filtering out non-viable strategies early in the development cycle. It’s not just research; it’s a commercially focused engine for innovation.

Symposium Themes Aligned with Our Mission

Many of the core themes discussed at the Symposium mirror Utility’s own priorities:

  • Cost and Durability: Delivering fuel cells and electrolyzers that meet the market’s economic and performance expectations.
  • Geologic Hydrogen and End Use: Exploring new frontiers with insights from Colorado Mines’ geological experts.
  • System Integration and Real-World Testing: Demonstrating technology at commercial scale to address challenges like hydrogen blending and dispensing.
  • Hard-to-Abate Sectors: Designing solutions tailored for industrial users—where hydrogen’s potential is both highest and hardest to capture.

Innovation That’s Market-Relevant

As CTO Stefan Reinartz noted, “This partnership allows us the unique opportunity for constant research and deep, innovative thinking that most companies traditionally don’t have. It will help us bring our innovations to market faster and ensure they’re exactly what the market needs.”

The Utility Global–Mines collaboration is already showing what’s possible when top-tier academic research is paired with bold commercial ambition. Together, we’re not just imagining the hydrogen economy—we’re building it.
